New Zealand's work visa system prioritizes accredited employers and skilled workers, with clear pathways to permanent residency.
- Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV): Primary temporary work visa for up to 5 years. Requires job offer from accredited employer, minimum skills/experience, and English proficiency (IELTS 4.0 for skill levels 4-5). Maximum 3-year stay for most level 4-5 roles.
- Skilled Migrant Category (SMC): Points-based permanent residency pathway. Requires 6+ points from occupation registration, recognized qualification, or income (1.5x median wage). Job offer from accredited employer mandatory.
- Work to Residence Visas: Pathway to residence after specified work period. Includes Green List Tier 2 (24 months work) and Care Workforce visas.
- Straight to Residence Visa: For Green List Tier 1 roles, allowing immediate residency application with eligible job offer.
